Biodiesel goes to school

Indiana State Agriculture Director Andy Miller and the Indiana Soybean Board Executive Director Chris Novak went to BioTown USA (Reynolds, IN) on Wednesday to introduce a biodiesel science kit to the White County school system.

Belinda Puetz with the ISB says the kit was developed with the help of Purdue University and the IN Department of Education, and is now ready for distribution to high school across the state. She told Brownfield, “It was only appropriate to start in BioTown.”

The kit makes learning about renewable fuels a part of the chemistry curriculum. “We wanted to teach basic chemistry while at the same time teach the students about the benefits of renewable fuels like soy biodiesel,” said Puetz.

The kit actually lets the students make soy biodiesel right in the lab. One school that tested the kit used the fuel they made to run the schools lawnmower. “The goal is to have these kits in school’s across the state,” said Puetz. “When these young people become motorists, they will already know all about the benefits of soy biodiesel.”
